Our focus is cancer. We are concentrating our efforts on areas of greatest unmet need, including sarcomas, endometrial cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and other blood cancers.
ARIAD’s approach to cancer targets four key areas of science. Our Phase 2 clinical trials of oral ridaforolimus (formerly called deforolimus) in advanced endometrial and prostate cancers are focused on hormone biology. Our Phase 1 clinical trial of AP24534 in blood cancers, along with our Phase 2 trial of ridaforolimus in breast cancer, seek to overcome drug resistance to current marketed therapies.
We are studying ridaforolimus and Herceptin as complementary inhibitors of both the HER-2 and mTOR pathways in breast cancer—potentially creating a vertical synergy in treatment between upstream and downstream inhibitors. We’re taking a similar approach with ridaforolimus in combination with our partner Merck’s IGF-1R inhibitor. Our next internally discovered drug candidate, an ALK inhibitor, focuses on an emerging target linked by genetics to certain malignancies such as non-small-cell lung cancer.
